Baltimore Orioles News

Garrett Olson has kept a busy schedule since completing nearly a full season with the Baltimore Orioles . The former Buchanan High and Fresno City standout vacationed in Grenada and Costa Rica before returning to Baltimore to play ... tennis.

Olson participated Friday in the Pam Shriver PNC Tennis Classic, which featured Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva.

In the tournament, he teamed with Dementieva to face Williams and Orioles teammate Adam Jones before an announced crowd of 7,231.

On the mound this year, he was 9-10 with a 6.65 ERA. He struck out 83 in 132 2/3 innings.

His best outing came against Seattle on Aug. 1. He pitched 8 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on 11 hits in a 10-5 victory.

The Bee caught up with Olson leading up to Friday's match.

Question: Before your doubles match, what is the first thing you're going to do when you meet Williams and Dementieva?

Answer: For starters, I'm going to say, 'Hey, what's going on?' Secondly, probably joke around. I know nothing about tennis and it's going to be really tough. I'm sure I'm going to catch myself watching her and Serena.

Do you enjoy watching tennis?

I like watching tennis on TV. I grew up watching [Pete] Sampras and [Andre] Agassi. Seeing this is really cool. I'm a fan, and let's be honest, I didn't fly out here to lose.

What type of things did you do when you visited Costa Rica?

I went near Arenal Volcano and went to Tamarindo. It was my first time and hopefully not my last. It was definitely awesome and very outdoorsy. We surfed, got in some river-rafting, zip-lining and hiking and I worked on the tan on the water.

And how was Grenada?

I explored the island a little bit. It was more of a relaxing time. I would say the vacation in Costa Rica was more active. I bought a huge machete from Grenada so I can take care of the weeds in the backyard.

Talking about Baseball, what did you learn last season that you can take into next season?

Going into this next year, I have more of an idea on what I need to do at that level. I just got to keep building and better outings will come out of it. Go out there every day and get more experience. Hopefully our team can put something together like the [ Tampa Bay ] Rays .
