Infielder Oscar Salazar has carved out a nice niche for himself in the final month of the 2008 season. And in doing so, the career minor leaguer might be creating space on the 2009 roster.

Salazar hit two home runs Sunday, giving him three in a two-game stretch. He impressed manager Dave Trembley in spring training with his bat, and his recent performance suggests the club may give him an opportunity to win a reserve infield spot in spring training.

"I know what I have to do, what I try to do," Salazar said. "Whatever they want me to do, I'll do."

Trembley suggested Salazar is most adept at first base, but can also play third. But he was adamant that Salazar's position was "right-handed hitter."

"He's a role player. And we have a predominance of left-handed bats," Trembley said. "It's nice to have a right-handed guy with a little (pop) in his bat."

Salazar, 30, is batting .244 with five home runs in 21 games after 939 games in the minor leagues.
