Orioles manager Dave Trembley has been wishing for strong starting pitching for over a month.
Tuesday, following Radhames Liz's eight shutout innings Sunday, Chris Waters showed that Trembley's hopes haven't fallen upon deaf ears. Waters, making his ninth career start, threw the Orioles' first complete-game shutout of the season, blanking Toronto on four hits and two walks. In doing so, Waters helped the Orioles post consecutive victories for the first time since a three-game win streak ended Aug. 15.
It was the Orioles' first shutout since a 9-0 win against Texas on Aug. 9.
While Waters (3-3) is an unlikely source for a shutout, he has given the Orioles reason to consider him for the 2009 roster. Waters threw eight shutout innings on one hit against the Angels on Aug. 5 -- his major league debut. Waters had lost his three previous outings before Tuesday's victory.
ORIOLES 2, BLUE JAYS 0: LHP Chris Waters threw his first career complete game, shutting out the Blue Jays on four hits and two walks. The Orioles managed just six hits, with Toronto starter Shaun Marcum departing in the third inning due to forearm numbness.
