Sooner or later, right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is bound to experience psychological problems. He has to be thinking about why he pitches so well but is unable to win most of his games. That has to bother him.

Guthrie has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 12 starts this season. His ERA is a respectable 3.64, but his record is 2-6. Making matters worse is that in his last three starts, all losses, his ERA is an outstanding 2.21.

"You enjoy the opportunity to be in a scuffle, to be in a fight. Personally, I'm able to be in one of those, it seems like, every five days, where every pitch matters, where every at-bat is big. You enjoy that and that's what makes this game fun. Unfortunately, for me, it's not going the right way," Guthrie confessed Wednesday after what has become a typical game for him.

"Last year, I got no-decisions for the most part. This year I feel like I'm throwing the ball very similar: consistent. This year, I'm taking losses instead of no-decisions. It compares somewhat to last year, to a stretch I had in May and June," Guthrie said, referring his string of 10 consecutive starts when he allowed three or fewer runs while pitching at least 6 1/3 innings.

Overall last year, he gave up three earned runs or fewer in 21 of his 26 starts, but the Orioles were 4-11 when his games were decided by two runs or fewer. He was 2-4 with 11 no-decisions in those games.

"It seems like every game Guthrie pitches is a well-pitched game on the other side. It's just worked out that way," manager Dave Trembley said. "All the games are close for him. He takes you late into every ballgame, but for whatever reason, we're just not scoring any runs when he's out there. But he certainly gives you everything he's got."

One factor is that Guthrie is the Orioles' No. 1 starter and he usually faces the No. 1 starter for the opposing teams, and those pitchers have the ability to shut down his teammates.
