Baltimore Orioles Inside Pitch 2009-05-07

Baltimore Orioles Inside Pitch 2009-05-07
The Orioles' plan is to build around pitching and defense.

Right now, they have neither.

The club entered 2009 with the stigma of a terrible pitching staff looming large, but the defense was supposed to be strong. Thus far, only the Nationals have a worse fielding percentage.

"I'm hoping that it's something that is temporary and resolves itself as we play more and as maybe each game doesn't seem to be as crucial and as pivotal on every pitch, every play, every at-bat," manager Dave Trembley said.

The Orioles upgraded their defense up the middle, particularly with the signing of Gold Glove shortstop Cesar Izturis and veteran catcher Gregg Zaun. Still, despite the improvements in defensive personnel, the shortcomings on the pitching staff seem to have placed added pressure on the Orioles fielders.

"We have been a victim of our mistakes," Trembley said. "We've been our own worst enemy."

ORIOLES 4, TWINS 1 (six innings): Nick Markakis hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Orioles an early lead before the rains wreaked havoc. The game was officially called after midnight, and after four stoppages in play.
