Baltimore Orioles Inside Pitch 2008-05-03
Manager Dave Trembley said before the team left for its coast-to-coast flight that he would have a lot of time to think about what he might do to make his lineup come up with more hits on its 10-game road trip that started on Friday in Anaheim.

Probably playing hunches more than anything, Trembley proved himself something of a genius as each of his lineup changes turned into runs for the Orioles.

One of the most noticeable changes was switching Nick Markakis and Melvin Mora, putting the former in the No. 2 hole and dropping Mora back to the No. 3 spot in the order.

Markakis, who has batted third in all but one game, was 7-for-37 (.189) in his 10 games prior to Friday. Mora, on the other hand, is 10-for-39 over the same span. Mora has been hitting well with runners in scoring position and dropping back could get him to the plate with more runners in scoring position.

In a seemingly less logical decision, Trembley had Jay Payton in left field for the second game in succession, leaving Luke Scott on the bench. The questions about that stem from Payton going into the Friday game at 0-for-13 in three starts and two pinch-hitting appearances since April 26. Scott was an equally inept 3-for-33 in his last 10 games.

Markakis and Mora each had two hits and two RBIs, while Payton made his manager look brilliant by walking and scoring and then later breaking his hitless string with two hits after his 0-for-14 stretch.

The manager stressed the need for patience from the hitters. He talked about being more concerned with when the Orioles got hits more than just needing to get them.

"I think it's more timely hitting. You need the two-out hit with guys on base. That's what you need," Trembley said. "Those kinds of things probably are areas that I'm more concerned with."

ORIOLES 4, ANGELS 3: Jeremy Guthrie pitched seven very good innings while Nick Markakis and Melvin Mora, who were flip-flopped in the batting order for Friday, each had two hits and two RBIs. Markakis hit his fifth home run in the first, but the Angels also scored in the first. Markakis doubled home the Orioles' second run and Mora got a hit to score Markakis in the fifth inning. Mora singled home the final run in the fifth. George Sherrill gave up a run and had the bases loaded before getting out of the ninth with his 11th save, tying him for the AL lead.
