Baltimore Orioles Inside Pitch 2008-05-07
Manager Dave Trembley is in a predicament. He believes that he has to keep Steve Trachsel in the rotation, but he also believes that he can't keep using Trachsel unless the veteran right-hander's pitching improves a great deal.

Trachsel's years of knowledge and his ability to help the young pitchers in the rotation mean nothing if he can't do what's needed of him on the field. He hasn't shouldered his share of the load.

Trachsel, 37, hasn't gotten through four innings in three of his last four starts. He is 1-4 with a ballooning 7.43 ERA. Still, Trembley doesn't want to give up on him just yet.

"I would say there's not going to be any review, and he will make his next start. His role here is to start," Trembley said. "I've never thought of putting him in the bullpen. He's pitched a long time in the big leagues, and he's never pitched out of the bullpen. I don't see a reason to think about doing that now."

A'S 4, ORIOLES 2: The Orioles' lack of hitting again proved decisive as they managed just four hits Tuesday in Oakland. They scored their only runs on Aubrey Huff's RBI single and Luke Scott's sacrifice fly. That wasn't enough for starter Brian Burres, who kept the Orioles in the game but fell to 3-3 because of the lack of support.
