The Orioles seem poised to come through with yet another late-season skid.
Seemingly a yearly occurrence, the Orioles enter September having lost 10 of their last 12 games, including three straight, and eight of nine. Now, the team is a season-worst 10 games under .500. The Orioles play three games in Fenway Park against the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox after being swept by the division-leading Rays. For the players called up in September, and those who haven't locked-in roster spots for 2009, the final month is crucial.
"I would hope people are intuitive enough to know what's going on around here," manager Dave Trembley said. "They need to take advantage of the opportunities they're given."
The team's biggest issues have come in trying to close out series. On Sunday, the Orioles fell to 15-29 in series-ending games.
The Orioles should get a boost from their September recalls. The best news of all for the Orioles, though, is that the team plays 16 of its last 22 games at home.
RAYS 10, ORIOLES 4: Tampa Bay's James Shields was brilliant for seven innings, allowing a lone run on six hits and two walks. The Orioles fell to 3-11 in games played indoors this season and 3-19 on Sundays.
