As if being mired in a season-worst skid weren't bad enough, the Orioles might face the remainder of the season without their ace.
Shortly before losing to 14-2 Boston on Tuesday, the Orioles found out that right-hander Jeremy Guthrie would skip Wednesday afternoon's start with a "tired arm." Then, the Orioles promptly went out and got hammered by the Red Sox, losing for the 12th time in 14 games. It was the team's fifth loss in a row, and fifth consecutive series defeat.
"Hopefully this is rock bottom," manager Dave Trembley said. "You get it out of your system, and hope to get a good game (Wednesday) and end on a positive note."
With Guthrie out Wednesday, Trembley is going to go with a committee, led by long reliever Lance Cormier.
"I don't know how much I'm going to get from him," Trembley said. "If I get three innings, I'll be satisfied."
RED SOX 14, ORIOLES 2: Boston LHP Jon Lester improved to 6-0 lifetime against the Orioles, but it was the Red Sox offense that earned the victory. Every Boston starter had at least one hit, and the Orioles pitchers lent a helping hand with eight walks.
