The Orioles might be heading toward another September swoon. But they're also on a path to do something that hasn't happened once in the history of the game.
Led by Brian Roberts, the Orioles have three players on pace to hit 50 doubles. On only 10 occasions have three players hit 50 doubles in a single season, let alone on the same team. Roberts enters Friday with a league-best 47 doubles, while Aubrey Huff has 44 and Nick Markakis has 43. According to Baseball Prospectus, no three teammates have ever hit 50 doubles in one season.
As a team, the Orioles have 286 doubles -- fifth-most in the major leagues.
Only 84 players in baseball history have hit 50 doubles in a season. Roberts has the highest single-season total of any of the Orioles' trio, having hit 50 in 2004. He's on pace for 55 this season. Huff hit a career-high 47 in 2003, and Markakis hit 43 last season.
Only Boston's Dustin Pedroia, who is tied with Huff at 44 doubles, breaks up the Orioles' trio from ranking 1-2-3 in the American League.
