Radhames Liz picked a good time to put together the best start of his young career.
Considered a candidate for the bullpen in 2009 after a string of unsuccessful starts this season, Liz, 25, responded with eight shutout innings Sunday against the Twins. "When I got men on base, I didn't want my motion to take me out of control," Liz said. "I took everything down."
He was in command Sunday, scattering just five hits and one walk, and throwing 66 strikes in his 108-pitch outing -- the longest of his big-league career.
Previously, Liz reached the seventh inning just once all season, when he went 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on June 14. The last time an Orioles starter went eight innings was Chris Waters' eye-opening debut on Aug. 5.
"Sooner or later, you're going to get it right," manager Dave Trembley said. "Sooner or later someone is going to get you started. I think today was a game that gives us something to get excited about for the future."
ORIOLES 7, TWINS 0: The Orioles hit five home runs in a game for the second time this season, and won for just the fourth time in 21 games. They also improved to 4-19 on Sundays.
