--RF Nick Markakis and the Orioles are in preliminary stages in discussing a long-term contract extension. The two sides talked figures in spring training but could not come to an agreement.
--RHP Radhames Liz will learn soon whether the club would like him to be a starter or reliever next spring, according to The Sun. Liz, 25, is a power pitcher, but he struggled this year in the Orioles bullpen. Some in the organization feel he'd be better served as a late-inning short reliever.
--LHP Brian Matusz suffered his first professional loss Oct. 29 in the Arizona Fall League. The Orioles' first-round pick this year allowed three runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- in three innings of a 12-6 loss for the Surprise Rafters.
BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Florida towns interested in the Orioles as potential spring training inhabitants. Fort Myers, Sarasota and Vero Beach join current spring training home Fort Lauderdale -- where the club will remain through 2009. The team's minor league complex is located in Sarasota.
