Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2008-12-10

Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2008-12-10
--C Ramon Hernandez was traded to Cincinnati for INF/OF Ryan Freel and two minor league infielders, Justin Turner and Brandon Waring. The Orioles also sent cash to the Reds in the deal to help offset Hernandez's $8.5 million salary.

--2B Brian Roberts has not been given a deadline to accept a contract extension, and the Orioles and their leadoff man continue discussions. Orioles president Andy MacPhail would like Roberts to sign a multiyear deal by spring training.

--RF Nick Markakis and the Orioles have broken off talks about a contract extension. The two sides are likely to resume conversations in January, after the unsettled free agent market dictates a fair price for Markakis.

--RHP Daniel Cabrera will learn by Dec. 12 whether the club has him in its plans for 2009. The Orioles have until that date to determine whether they will tender him another contract and perhaps enter arbitration, or if they will let him become a free agent. The Orioles would like to upgrade the rotation, and Cabrera's struggles leave him vulnerable if the team meets its goal.

--1B Kevin Millar is free to explore opportunities elsewhere after the Orioles declined to offer him arbitration. Millar, 36, could return to the club, but the Orioles first are expected to seek younger talent via free agency.

--SS Juan Castro, who saw the most playing time at the position late last season, is unlikely to return. The 36-year-old veteran was not offered arbitration, and the Orioles are expected to pursue a younger player to fill the position.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- seasons the Orioles have RF Nick Markakis under control. Seeking a contract extension, he can't become a free agent until after 2011.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I wouldn't say (it's been) tiring, but it's been a long, drawn-out process. It just goes back and forth. For the most part, like I've said 1,000 times, you want to come to something that is comfortable for both sides -- something good for the Orioles and something good for myself and my family." -- RF Nick Markakis, to The Sun, on negotiations with the Orioles about a contract extension.
