--OF Luke Scott entered spring training with the mindset of earning playing time in left field. Scott, 30, played 106 games in left field last season, but is expected to serve as the primary designated hitter in 2009.
--1B Aubrey Huff used the same routine he did last winter. He rested. Huff, who had hernia surgery last offseason, duplicated a winter of inactivity, which led to a career year. --RHP Jeremy Guthrie will pitch for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Guthrie's absence from Orioles camp will allow the club to evaluate its numerous options for the final three spots in the starting rotation.
--LHP George Sherrill was slowed by a sore hamstring in the first week of camp. The 2008 American League All-Star closer is expected to keep his role in 2009, despite the return of former closer Chris Ray.
--OF Nolan Reimold is in his first major league spring training, three and a half years after the Orioles drafted him in the second round. Reimold, 25, told the Baltimore Sun he "doesn't project (his future) at all." He is likely destined for Class AAA Norfolk, as Luke Scott, Ryan Freel, Felix Pie and Lou Montanez as more experienced contenders for the left field slot.
