Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2009-03-25

Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2009-03-25
--RHP Koji Uehara, out for two weeks with a left hamstring strain, returned to action March 24 against the Nationals. He allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings, and he introduced a new changeup. Pitching Rick Kranitz was pleased with the results of the new pitch.

--C Guillermo Quiroz was released by the Orioles, ending his quest to become the club's reserve catcher for the second consecutive season. Chad Moeller and Robbie Hammock are the favorites to back up Gregg Zaun.

--RHP Jim Johnson was shut down because of a shoulder impingement, similar to the injury that curtailed his breakout 2008 season. Johnson is receiving treatment on the shoulder and sounded optimistic recently about his chances of being ready by Opening Day.

--LHP Jamie Walker is working on a screwball with former Orioles pitcher Mike Cuellar, according to MASNsports.com. Walker, who missed much of September because of elbow discomfort, said he's feeling strong this spring.

--INF Justin Turner has made an impressive debut in Orioles camp, prompting discussion around camp about the possibility the former Reds farmhand could break camp with the Orioles. Turner, who is not on the 25-man roster, has never played above Class AA and likely is destined for Class AAA Norfolk.

--LHP Rich Hill wasn't as happy with his third bullpen session, telling MASNsports.com it "didn't go as well as I wanted it to." Hill, who is out of minor league options, is trying to battle back from elbow and back injuries to land a role on the Orioles staff.

--SS Blake Davis is no longer in Orioles camp, having returned to Baltimore to undergo surgery on a broken left foot. Davis, 25, was considered a longshot to make the roster and was sent down to the minor league camp in Sarasota.

BY THE NUMBERS: 5 -- Strikeouts, against only one walk, recorded by LHP Brian Matusz in 4 2/3 innings before the 2008 first-round pick was sent to minor league camp.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We weren't focused on him being a starting pitcher. I can't tell you guys everything. I can't show my cards all the time. We can't say that. But it all takes care of itself." -- Orioles manager Dave Trembley on the club's mindset with RHP Radhames Liz, who recently was relegated to relief duty only.
