Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2009-04-03
--RHP Adam Eaton, fighting for a spot in the Orioles rotation, didn't help his cause during his final Grapefruit League start. He allowed five runs in five innings April 2 against the Mets, leaving his spring ERA at 7.29.

--C Robby Hammock was reassigned to the Orioles' minor league camp after hitting .242 in spring training. The team will go with Chad Moeller as its backup catcher, despite Moeller's .148 spring average.

--INF/OF Jolbert Cabrera was reassigned to the Orioles' minor league camp despite hitting .467 (21-for-45) in spring training. Cabrera hit .252 for Cincinnati last year, his first big-league action since 2004.

--RHP Hayden Penn, who pitched his way out of the Orioles rotation with a poor spring, was traded to the Marlins in exchange for INF Robert Andino. Penn had a 10.06 ERA in Grapefruit League play, while Andino was hitting .203. Andino, 24, will serve as the Orioles' backup shortstop, giving the team a 13th position player. The Orioles had considered carrying 12 position players and 13 pitchers.

--INF Chris Gomez was released by the Orioles. He lost his roster spot when the team acquired INF Robert Andino from the Marlins.

--RHP Radhames Liz, optioned to Class AAA Norfolk on March 31, was more effective as a reliever than as a starter late in camp. Manager Dave Trembley likes Liz's potential as a reliever, saying the flame-thrower can "be a lot more effective coming out of the bullpen."

--OF Lou Montanez was optioned to Class AAA Norfolk on March 31 despite hitting .340 this spring. His chances for making the team dimmed when the team acquired INF/OF Ty Wigginton.

--RHP Jeremy Guthrie will start on Opening Day, manager Dave Trembley confirmed after Guthrie's second outing with his club upon returning from the World Baseball Classic. The Orioles ace looked rough in his international outings and wasn't spectacular in his first two spring training outings, either.

--C Matt Wieters opened eyes in his first spring training, but -- as expected -- it didn't matter. Wieters could join the Orioles by mid-April but is more likely to be recalled from Class AAA Norfolk in May.

--LHP Rich Hill will start the season on the disabled list. The move is as much a ploy to keep him under the Orioles' control as it is to allow him to battle through arm fatigue.

--INF Justin Turner said he felt he took advantage of opportunities with his .375 average and three home runs this spring. He told the Baltimore Sun, "I'd like to think that I opened some eyes here."

BY THE NUMBERS: 0 -- Times Adam Jones was caught attempting to steal in his first seven attempts in spring training.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's fun up here. It's fun wherever you are, but it's even more fun up here. I'm excited to be playing in Norfolk. It's a different level of competition for me. I just want to go there and work hard and get back as soon as possible." -- C Matt Wieters.
