Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2009-04-06
--RHP Adam Eaton was selected as the Orioles' No. 5 starter, but he won't open the season in Baltimore. Eaton, who is not on the 40-man roster, will pitch at extended spring training in Sarasota, Fla., until he is needed. Until that time, probably around April 11 according to the Baltimore Sun, RHP Brian Bass will stay on the 25-man roster as a long reliever.

--C Gregg Zaun will be healthy enough to start the season in Baltimore. The veteran backstop battled elbow soreness at the end of spring training, a result of an offseason procedure to remove bone chips. He'll start until top prospect Matt Wieters is recalled, probably by mid-June.

--INF Scott Moore re-opened eyes in Fort Lauderdale. After a disappointing 2008 season -- spent entirely at Class AAA Norfolk -- Moore batted .327 with three home runs and was among the final cuts.

--LHP Jamie Walker spent much of spring training working with former Orioles pitcher Mike Cuellar. According to MASNsports.com, Walker adjusted his changeup and picked up a screwball while working with Cuellar.

--OF Ryan Freel could start in left field on opening day, as the Orioles face Yankees LHP CC Sabathia. Freel, who is the team's utility player, would likely get the nod over unproven 24-year-old Felix Pie, a left-handed hitter.

BY THE NUMBERS: 58 -- Career major league starts by the Orioles' top three starters, Jeremy Guthrie (57), Koji Uehara (0) and Alfredo Simon (one).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You can get lucky with the bullpen. You can't get lucky with starting pitching." -- Orioles president Andy MacPhail on the questions surrounding the club's pitching staff.
