Baltimore Orioles Notes, Quotes 2008-05-03
--RHP Jeremy Guthrie allowed only two runs on three hits in seven innings on Friday and got his first win in his seventh start. Guthrie walked only two batters and each came around to score.

--RHP Steve Trachsel, scheduled to start against the Angels on Sunday, gave up 10 runs in only 4 2/3 innings in two starts as an Oriole against the Angels last year. He emerged at 0-1 but with a 19.29 ERA. He is not as bad against them for his career: 2-2, 5.14.

--RHP Randor Bierd, the Rule 5 draft acquisition from the Tigers who has been a reliable reliever, was put on the 15-day DL late Thursday because of discomfort in his right shoulder. Bierd gave up three runs in 2/3 of an inning in his last two games after shutting out opponents in 12 2/3 innings in his first seven appearances. He was replaced on the roster by RHP Lance Cormier.

--LF Jay Payton started in place of the slumping Luke Scott for the second straight game. Scott was 3-for-33 in his last 10 games and manager Dave Trembley is looking for a spark in his lineup.

--2B Brian Roberts had his 10-game hitting streak ended on Friday, but a bare-handed defensive play he made to keep speedy leadoff batter Chone Figgins off the bases when he led off the eighth inning was as valuable as a hit might have been.

--LHP George Sherrill gave up two hits and allowed a run on a fielder's choice before loading the bases with one out. Two pop-ups got Sherrill and the Orioles out of the game and the closer got his 11th save.

BY THE NUMBERS: 30 -- RHP Daniel Cabrera didn't walk a batter in his April 23 start at Seattle. It was the first time in 30 starts that the still developing right-hander did not issue a base on balls.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, you'd have to use some common sense. I have to look down the road. I understand there is an interest from fans and everybody wants to know, but I can't give answers to things that I don't have answers for and I don't like to speculate because I get myself in trouble when I change my mind. So I'd rather not change anything." -- Manager Dave Trembley, about what he'll do with adjust his starting rotation.
