--LHP George Sherrill did not look good in his first appearance in a month, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in one-third of an inning. Sherrill, who came off the 15-day disabled list Thursday, had not pitched since Aug. 16.
--INF Oscar Salazar started at first base Sunday, a product of a hot bat. He responded with two home runs, giving him three in the last two games. --RF Nick Markakis hit two home runs, his 19th and 20th of the season. It was the second multi-homer game of his career, and the second straight year he's reached 20 home runs. He hit 23 in 2007.
--OF Lou Montanez hit his second career home run in the fourth inning, going back-to-back with 1B Oscar Salazar. The 365-foot fly marked the sixth time this year the Orioles hit back-to-back home runs.
--RHP Jeremy Guthrie, who hopes to return this season, threw a side session before the game. Guthrie has missed three consecutive starts, the first due to a tired arm, the next because of the flu, and the most recent because he was not up to speed after the first two missed starts. A date for his next start has not been announced.
--3B Melvin Mora was given Sunday off by manager Dave Trembley. Mora returned from a strained hamstring last week, and Trembley has made a regular practice of resting veterans in day games.
BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Players who could reach 50 doubles this season. Through Sept. 14, DH Aubrey Huff had 48, 2B Brian Roberts had 47 and RF Nick Markakis had 45.
