The club's decision to go with 12 pitchers, rather than 13, has been scrutinized heavily. In the opening week, Orioles starters struggled to go deep into games, placing strain on a promising bullpen. The Orioles lack a viable left-hander with the ability to go multiple innings out of the bullpen, a role officials hoped Mark Hendrickson would fill. But because of a lack of better options in the rotation, Hendrickson is currently the Orioles' No. 4 starter.
PLAYER NEWS: --3B Melvin Mora was held out of Monday's lineup with a hamstring strain. Mora, who said his left hamstring continues to worsen, is considered day-to-day.
--INF Ty Wiggington made his second start at third base Monday. The reserve corner infielder drove in his first two Orioles runs on a 2-for-5 night.
--OF Felix Pie made his fifth start in left field, and he belted his first Orioles home run in a 10-9 win. Pie went 3-for-4 in his most productive appearance before he was replaced by PH Ryan Freel.
MEDICAL WATCH:
3B Melvin Mora (left hamstring strain) sat out the April 13 game. He is day-to-day.
LHP Rich Hill (left elbow soreness) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. As of mid-April, there was no timetable for him to start a rehab assignment.
LHP John Parrish (small tear in left shoulder) will not pitch in 2009. He was in camp on a minor league contract.
