--RF Nick Markakis started a new streak Wednesday. A day after failing to reach base for the first time in 36 games, Markakis homered in the first inning, going 2-for-3 to raise his average to .364.
--OF Felix Pie started in left field Wednesday night, against the Twins' right-handed control artist, Kevin Slowey. Pie batted eighth, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout and dropping his average to .158. --OF Lou Montanez will start in left field Thursday night, manager Dave Trembley revealed Wednesday. He was available to pinch-hit Wednesday, as the swelling in his injured right thumb had gone down, but went unused in the rain-shortened affair.
MEDICAL WATCH:
OF Lou Montanez (sore right thumb) was injured making a catch May 2 and sat out May 3-6. He is scheduled to start May 7.
RHP Dennis Sarfate (numbness in right middle finger) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 2.
OF/INF Ryan Freel (head) went on the 15-day disabled list April 21 after being hit in the head by a pickoff throw the previous day. He began a rehab assignment with Class AA Bowie on May 1.
RHP Alfredo Simon (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He had season-ending Tommy John surgery in early May.
LHP Rich Hill (left elbow soreness) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Frederick on April 24.
