Nationals-Orioles Preview 2008-05-17

Nationals-Orioles Preview 2008-05-17
The Baltimore Orioles would rather not have to come from behind to win every night.

But as long as they're winning, they won't be complaining.

The Orioles will look for their seventh win in eight games on Saturday when they continue their series with the Washington Nationals at Camden Yards.

All six of Baltimore's recent wins have come by three or fewer runs, and its last three have come consecutively after falling behind early.

The Orioles (22-19) trailed Boston by three runs in each game of a two-game sweep Tuesday and Wednesday, and they erased an early two-run deficit in a 5-3 win over the Nationals (18-25) on Friday.

"Obviously it's not the way you want to draw it up, playing from behind all the time, but you've got to do an awful lot of little things right to get yourself back in," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said.

"Some people call it Orioles Magic, I guess," starter Garrett Olson told his team's official Web site. "But I really feel like it's the sense of attitude that everybody has - the confidence and the presence where even if we fall behind, we're still going to battle."

Friday, that involved Luke Scott's tying home run in the fourth inning, Melvin Mora's go-ahead RBI double in the fifth and four shutout innings by the Orioles' bullpen. Closer George Sherrill earned his 16th save in 18 opportunities.

The Orioles also ended a four-game losing streak in the Beltway Series after they were swept at home by the Nationals last June.

Left-hander Brian Burres will look to give Baltimore its fourth straight win overall, which would be its longest winning streak since it won six in a row the first week of the season.

After a promising start, Burres (3-4, 3.59 ERA) has lost his last three starts, allowing four runs each time. He gave up four runs and nine hits at Kansas City on Sunday.

"Burres was walking a tightrope," Trembley said. "Late in the game he walked the No. 9 guy (Joey Gathright). That's a no-no, but he kept us in the game."

Odalis Perez (1-3, 3.71) has kept Washington in most of his starts this season, but he didn't earn his first win until Monday at New York. He gave up four runs and a season-high 11 hits to the Mets in 6 1-3 innings, but finally got more than three runs of support for the first time this year in a 10-4 win.

"It wasn't the best way to get it. It was a struggle," Perez said. "It wasn't easy in those early innings. I wasn't making a lot of good pitches but the offense was helping me, and even me helping myself."

Perez was 3-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate in that game, but he won't have a chance to hit Saturday in an AL ballpark.

The last-place Nationals, who won three of four against the Mets this week, had won four straight in Baltimore before Friday's game. They're now 7-6 against the Orioles since they moved from Montreal.
